Cannabis use can vary quite a bit from person to person and from one situation to another. For a college student living in their own apartment, there is probably plenty of time to enjoy the experience of using cannabis, plus the likelihood of other people with whom to enjoy it.

In contrast, a busy parent might find that using cannabis is something they barely fit into a busy day, or something that’s a welcome relief once the kids are in bed. Use of cannabis might feel rushed and can often be done solo.

Regardless of the situation you are in, we at Cream of the Crop suggest that cannabis should be used mindfully. That means paying attention, on purpose, to the present moment as you use it.

We believe that mindful cannabis use is the best way to enhance your experience and to use it in a responsible, deliberate way.

So, what do we mean when we say “mindful cannabis use?”

  1. Taking your time with the consumption experience — not rushing it.

  2. Focusing on just the consumption experience — not multitasking.

  3. Looking carefully at the flower and appreciating the crystal-like trichomes.

  4. Taking a deep whiff of the flower before you consume it to appreciate the aroma produced by the flower’s terpenes.

  5. Focusing on the inhalation and exhalation of the flower, looking for any flavors that come through.

  6. Paying attention to the effect of the flower on your body and mind.

If you are beginning to realize that your cannabis use could be a bit more mindful, we have got you covered! Below are some ways to use mindfulness techniques as a way to re-imagine your cannabis use (we’ll be focusing especially on the latter two items in our list above). Note that we are assuming that you are inhaling flower, though these exercises can be adapted for any cannabis consumption method.

  1. Count your breaths.
Before you even use cannabis at all, try this brief breathing exercise to center yourself comfortably and firmly in the present moment. As you inhale, get ready to count your first breath. As you exhale, count “one.” Repeat this process and try counting up to five breaths. Then, begin your counting cycle again and repeat until you’ve counted a total of about 15-20 breaths.

Now that you have taken some time to root yourself in the present moment, you are ready to use your cannabis. Continue focusing on your breath as you take your first inhalation and exhalation. Pause for at least a moment before taking your next inhalation. Notice how the smoke or vapor feels in your lungs as you breathe in and out. Take your time and don’t rush it — savor the experience like you are eating a favorite meal that you rarely get to eat, rather than scarfing food on your way out of a drive-through.

  1. Watch your thoughts.
Instead of trying to control your thoughts, let them go wild! Just pay attention to each thought as you have it without judging it; it might help to visualize yourself up in a tower, on the look-out for thoughts, fully expecting them to come. If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to whatever thought you last had.

Different strains could make this exercise easier or more difficult, depending on whether you experience racing thoughts. Regarding Cream of the Crop strains, we suggest one of our low intensity flowers, such as the “Focused” Animal Mints 4 or the “Lively” Lemon Sorbet. We have found these strains to have an easing effect on the mind, making it easier to complete a task like watching your thoughts.

  1. Pay attention to sensations in your body.
Try paying attention, on purpose, to the feel of your feet touching the floor, your back against a chair, or even the flow of air in and out of your nostrils. You can also focus on the unique body high effect of the strain you tried. Remember, if your mind wanders, gently and patiently bring it back to the sensations you are feeling in your body.

Two Cream of the Crop strains that typically give users pleasant body highs are our “Relaxed” strains: Vision 10 and our flagship strain, OGKB.

  2. Listen.
Focus in on the sounds you’re hearing. You might listen to the wind, traffic, or even annoying sounds like a loud lawnmower. No matter what the sound, pay attention to it without judgment. As most cannabis users know, listening to your favorite music can also be a wonderful experience.

Two high intensity Cream of the Crop strains that we think are great choices for a mindful exercise like this are: the “Lively” Vision 2 and the “Euphoric” Banana Peel.

We hope that this introduction to mindful cannabis use gives you a newfound appreciation for this wonderful plant and the amazing, even mysterious, effects it has on us. Take a deep breath and begin a mindful experience the next time you ready to indulge!
